Virtual 3D city models are being increasingly developed by cities and regions and made available as 3D regional information systems for diverse applications in the area of urban planning, city marketing and the environment. simu SOLAR uses the geometry data of these models for well-founded solar potential analyses.

Another opportunity to analyse cities or whole regions due to it's solar potential is using high-resolution laserscan data with simu SOLAR.

The results of these calculations inform real estate holders about a sensible use of their roofs for solar heat and photovoltaic plants and sensitise for the use of renewable energy.

The implementation of solar power systems is encouraged by providing the following information for every roof surface:

  • orientation, inclination and size of the roof surface
  • radiation amount per year
  • CO2 savings per year
  • yield per year

Through a cartographic presentation and retrieval of the results on the internet (for example on a geo data server, Google Maps or Google Earth) citizens can find out with one mouse click if a solar plant on their roof is profitable.
